Lisa Cannistraci owner of the legendary Henrietta Hudson which has been Manhattan’s number-one lesbian bar for over twenty five years talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. Cannistraci officially partnered with WorldPride | Stonewall 50 and presented two fabulous parties at a venue she has created at Watermark Pier 15 at the South Street Seaport, 78 South Street in NYC. We talked to Lisa about her events, her relationship with Stormé DeLarverie who threw the first punch at the historic Stonewall Inn Riot on June 28th in 1969 and her spin on our LGBTQ issues.
Lisa Cannistraci landed in Greenwich Village, NYC in March of 1985 and immediately felt at home. She was hired as a bartender at The Cubby Hole which is now Henrietta Hudson while finishing her Bachelor Science degree from St. John’s University in Psychology. Her LGBTQ activism rose during the AIDS epidemic joining ACT UP and began engaging in their radical demonstrations to get the government to help save our lives. Cannistraci’s fight for LGBTQ equality continued as Vice President of Marriage Equality USA leading to the U.S. Supreme Court DOMA case with her dear friend Edie Windsor that changed history forever. Currently Lisa is engaged in the fight for transgender equality as our trans brothers and sisters are being attacked daily by the government and citizens alike. She believes that intersectionality must be a part of our continued movement stating, “You hurt one of us. You hurt all of us.”

Filmmakers Kate Davis and David Heilbroner talk with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about their documentary Stonewall Uprising that will broadcast on PBS’s American Experience on Tuesday June 11th at 9P. The film is based on David Carter’s Stonewall: The Riots that Sparked the Gay Revolution and told through interviews with Stonewall patrons, reporters and the policeman who led the raid. Stonewall Uprising recalls the fervently hostile climate in which the gay community was forced to live when the vast majority of medical authorities decreed homosexuality a mental disorder and often prescribed brutal treatment, including lobotomy. This was a time when LGBTQ relationships were illegal in every state except Illinois and our community frequently found themselves being hauled off to jail and their names splashed in the next day’s newspaper. Police entrapment was rampant and being arrested meant that licenses to teach, practice law, medicine or even cosmetology might be denied or revoked. All that began to change on June 28th 1969 when the N.Y.P.D. raided the Stonewall Inn and the gay community experienced what one Village Voice reporter who was on the scene called it a "Rosa Parks moment.” For the first time patrons refused to be led into paddy wagons, setting off a violent uprising that contributed to launching the gay rights movement. Exactly one year later America saw its first Gay Pride Parade as thousands marched up Sixth Avenue in NYC. We talked to Kate and David about their inspiration for this must-see documentary and their spin on our LGBTQ issues.
When asked what they hope to accomplish with this documentary Davis stated, “We hope that the film will help a general population actually across the country and maybe the world to incorporate gay history into American history.” Heilbroner concluded, “One of the things I hope our film can do besides reminding people where the pride parade comes from which is directly out of the Stonewall riots but also we should be grateful how far we have come even though we have a long way to go. It’s amazing how far America has come in the last fifty years.”

They co-directed/co-produced The Newburgh Sting (Peabody Award), Stonewall Uprising (Peabody Award) for American Experience, The Cheshire Murders for HBO and Scopes: The Battle Over America’s Soul for The History Channel. Their most recent film, Say Her Name: The Life And Death Of Sandra Bland premiered at The Tribeca Film Festival, broadcasted on HBO and won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Television Documentary. Stoli LGBTQ ambassador Patrik Gallineaux and artist Lisa Marie Thalhammer talk with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about Stoli Vodka’s special “Spirit of Stonewall” Limited Edition bottle designed by Thalhammer to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. The limited edition bottle will help raise funds for the Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative in support of its mission to eliminate the social intolerances that impacts the lives of our LGBTQ community in America and abroad through awareness campaigns, educational programming, fundraising and public dialogue. Lisa Marie Thalhammer is an award-winning visual artist best known for her iconic 13-color rainbow "LOVE" mural located on Blagden Alley in Washington, D.C.'s Shaw neighborhood. For the Spirit of Stonewall bottle Thalhammer used a mural theme and incorporated emblematic LGBTQ imagery including five hands and three protest signs at the corner of Gay and Christopher Streets outside of the Stonewall Inn, a high heel to represent the transgender activists who initiated the 1969 uprising, a sign spelling out "LIBERATION" as a reference to the Gay Liberation Front that includes three gender symbols as well as a peace sign and protest fist holding a rainbow energy ribbon that swirls between fingers and brings the community together. Since 2010 Patrik has represented Stoli vodka as North American LGBTQ Manager and Ambassador for Stoli Group USA. We talked to Patrick and Lisa Marie about the Stoli “Spirit of Stonewall” campaign and their spin on our LGBTQ issues.
When asked what she would like to accomplish with this campaign Thalhammer stated, “I really want my artwork to inspire people to join the movement for love. To really practice kindness with each other within the community and really value the diverse identities that we all have and then also hope that this artwork can celebrate you know where we have been and how far we have come. Just thinking about what happened at Stonewall Inn in 1969 and how many trials and tribulations LGBTQ people had to go through at that time and to think about the visibility that we have now. We still have so much further to go but it’s really inspiring to see the change that can be made just in a lifetime.”
Stoli will be hosting an event scheduled to take place on June 25th during World Pride in New York City. Additionally a piece of art commemorating the Spirit of Stonewall is planned for an unveiling ahead of the Stoli Key West Cocktail Classic the world's largest annual LGBTQ bartending competition beginning on June 4th.

Ty Herndon the award winning country singer talks about the 2019 Concert for Love & Acceptance at the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville, Tennessee on June 6th with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. The 5th annual concert takes place during the legendary Country Music Association Festival and will be hosted by Grammy-nominated and Dove Award-winning artist Herndon and CMT’s Cody Alan. The concert features a coalition of artists and celebrities appearing and performing to accelerate acceptance for LGBTQ people. Herndon co-founded the concert with GLAAD the world's largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization in 2015 and will also perform along with Antigone Rising, Daughtry, Harper Grae, Tayla Lynn, Brody Ray, Brandon Stansell, Rita Wilson, Chely Wright, Tyler Rich, Lee Brice, Mickey Guyton and more. Anita Cochran is returning as a performer and musical director for the show. We talked to Ty about his inspiration for The Concert for Love & Acceptance and his spin on our LGBTQ issues.
When asked as we approach the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall how he sees our LGBTQ community moving forward in this Trump administration Herndon stated, “You know that’s a big question. In this administration today I know there have been many challenges. I pretty much try to focus my attention on the kids and where we are in the South. We have seen the suicide rate go down but there’s so much work to be done educating not only the kids but educating the parents out there that don’t want to lose their kids. When I first started doing this even in a political environment it was hard to get people to listen to me. You’d go ‘Hey, do you know how may LGBTQ suicides you had in your state alone this last year?’ I had a number of people go, that’s not correct and I’m like no go look it up, it is correct. So when it comes to having power at all, it comes to the children...”
Ty Herndon’s career spans two decades with 20 Billboard charted singles and 5 million albums sold. He continuously performs shows and maintains a heavy appearance schedule proving Herndon as unstoppable. In 2014 Ty was the first major male country artist to publicly come out as gay. Shortly after he made history when he hosted the first country music event, The Concert for Love and Acceptance. The event is designed to bring attention and support to at-risk youth. Since the launch of the event Herndon has partnered with GLAAD to produce the event each year using his celebrity influence for the better good. GLAAD announced that a grant named after Herndon was being offered to support young people for their commitment to enhancing LGBTQ inclusion and representation in music. The recipient of the Ty Herndon Rising Stars Grant receives $2,500 to further fund their work and initiatives. We’ll be covering the 2019 Concert for Love & Acceptance that takes place at the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville, Tennessee on June 6th.

When asked what he would like to accomplish with this event Stokes stated, “This is really important because it allows us to reach into the fan base of the country music community which is an enormous fan base. It’s the most popular format of music in the country behind R&B and so reaching country fans at a place they can be at each year at the Country Music Association Festival in Nashville to shine a light on stories of acceptance and LGBTQ equality is super important. A lot of people across this country haven’t made up their minds yet how they feel about LGBTQ equality and may be with us on marriage equality but they may not understand the transgender experience just yet. We’re bringing all those a message to the fan base because we want them to see what we know which is that if you’re not loving and accepting LGBTQ friends, family, community, church members, the people at work then you’re living in the past and not in the future and that’s where we’re trying to go.”

Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson talks about the launch of her new boutique LGBTQ streaming network OUTTAKE MEDIA™. The site is very user-friendly and device savvy. The state of the art homepage is divided into three categories. First there is a widescreen video player that showcases original programming. Since this is the 15th anniversary of marriage equality in Massachusetts the first showcase highlighted is Charlotte’s short film OUTTAKE that chronicles the historic events that took place in 2004. The film was shot by Kirsten Martin and narrated by Arline Isaacson Co Chair of the Massachusetts Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus. The next category is “WE LOVE” and features organizations and companies that have been very supportive of our LGBTQ community. Kicking off this section includes “The Dinah” Palm Springs celebrating 30 years of this iconic lesbian event, “Marilyn Rosen Presents” that will be featuring performances and conversations with A-List artists and GLAAD the global LGBTQ media advocacy organization that has been supportive of OUTTAKE MEDIA™ since it first launched in 2007. The last section on the homepage is “VISIT” that highlights two LGBTQ destinations: Provincetown, Massachusetts and Greater Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The new “STREAM” page features Filmmaker Jeffrey Schwarz fabulous documentary “VITO” about pioneer gay activist Vito Russo, tello Films talk show “Happy Wife Happy Life” with Bridget McManus, Karman Kregloe, Cat Davis and Kristen Smith and concluding the streaming page is “TransMilitary” a must-watch documentary especially with the current administration’s assault on our transgender troops. All content on OUTTAKE MEDIA™ will be updated on a regular basis. We talked to Charlotte about her inspiration for creating this fabulous new media concept and how she designed it in a way that it will take on a life of its own.
Charlotte Robinson’s broadcast career spans over decades. She was the first woman audio engineer at WCVB-TV in Boston and then worked at ABC New York and NBC New York until she joined CBS New York where she was on staff for 5 years. She worked on the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather and then joined CBS Sports where she earned an Emmy Award for NFL Today. She left CBS in the mid eighties to live authentically and pursue her producing ambitions. OUTTAKE MEDIA™ is fed first hand news and content by organizations and publicists receiving about 100 requests a day. Since 2007 it has built a huge global audience with millions of viewers. In these difficult political times Charlotte always understood that the media is extremely powerful. Leslie Cohen talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about the legendary nightclub for women Sahara that she established with three of her friends in May of 1976 to December of 1979 at 1234 Second Avenue at East 65th Street on Manhattan’s fashionable Upper East Side. Cohen, Michelle Florea, Linda Goldfarb and Barbara Russo created New York City’s first upscale women’s club that showcased women in art, politics and music. On Thursday night the line went around the block when both men and women were invited in for political fundraisers and cabaret. Celebrities such as Jane Fonda, Tom Hayden, Patti Smith, Pat Benatar, Warren Beatty, Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinem, Bella Abzug and Elaine Noble, the first openly gay state Representative from Massachusetts appeared or performed there. This led to Leslie and her partner Beth Suskin becoming the models for the iconic sculpture “Gay Liberation,” in Greenwich Village which commemorates the Stonewall riots and was declared a national monument by President Obama in 2016. We talked to Leslie about how Sahara changed the course of her life and her spin on the future of our LGBTQ civil rights.
When asked what the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots means to her Cohen stated, “First of all it’s a celebration of how far we’ve come and it’s also a reminder of how precarious the rights that we have achieved have become under Trump who is consistently chipping away at everything we have fought for over the last 50 years. So this reminder is very important now to remind people to educate young people about how difficult it was and how much everyone has to fight for what we now have. I know the New York Historical Society, because I have been working with them, is putting together a major exhibition of Stonewall 50 and I would really encourage people to go. It’s going to have a section on Sahara which makes me very happy because it’s so important to know our history and to make sure our history is recorded and to continue pressuring for equal rights for ourselves and not only for ourselves now but for trans people who were so instrumental in Stonewall and the early gay rights movement because they were courageous and brave. We should also be very vigilant because these rights can be taken away. It’s important to stay visible and it’s important to be out there. Write your books, tell your stories, make sure that we are part of history and people can refer to it especially young people. This is so important for young people to see that there are many gays and lesbians who fought for their rights and have found joy and happiness. I’m happy being a lesbian. I’ve had a lot of joy and a lot of fun and I want young people to know that. I have found love. I’ve been with my now wife for 42 years and it’s possible. You will find happiness.”
Leslie Cohen moved to Miami to practice law in 1992 and is now retired. She has just finished a memoir about her life during the time of Sahara, the creation and controversy over the “Gay Liberation” sculpture and her enduring love affair with her partner and now wife of 42 years, Beth.

Producer Lotti Pharriss Knowles talks about her new project “Goddess: The Fall and Rise Of Showgirls” with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ that she is producing with Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Jeffrey Schwarz. A pivotal interviewee already announced is “Showgirls” director Paul Verhoeven (Robocop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Starship Troopers, Elle) who has also given this project his full blessing. Director Jeffrey Schwarz stated, “It’s been a longtime dream to make the definitive documentary about a film that has fascinated and flabbergasted audiences since its release in 1995. ‘Showgirls’ is a misunderstood masterpiece and although it is a gaudy, over the top spectacle, it wrestles with issues of sex, power and the American Dream. ‘Goddess’ will dig deep into the intentions of its creators, recount the negative reaction by the press and the public and chronicle how the cult of ‘Showgirls’ has grown over the years.” We talked to Lotti about her inspiration for producing this significant documentary “Goddess: The Fall & Rise Of Showgirls” and her spin on our LGBTQ issues.
When asked what she hopes to accomplish with her work, Pharriss Knowles stated, “All of my work has a similar angle to it which is to entertain my audience. I always have that in the forefront of my mind but I also always want to work in something that has some kind of social commentary or message. Kind of once people finish the ice cream cone maybe there’s a little nut at the center that they’re like ‘oh that was fun but now I’m thinking about something.’ I’ve been an activist and someone interested in social issues my whole life. I mean that was stuff my parents and I would talk about around the dinner table. So I just can’t help that I always have a little bit of that or a lot of that in any piece of work that I’m involved in or creating.”
Lotti Pharriss Knowles is a writer and Emmy-nominated producer based in Los Angeles. She is the writer and producer of horror-comedy feature film “Chastity Bites” and with documentary filmmaker Jeffrey Schwarz she produced “I Am Divine”, “The Fabulous Allan Carr” and HBO Documentary Films’ “Vito”. Her play “Because They Have No Words” was nominated by Los Angeles Stage Alliance’s Ovation Awards for World Premiere Play and was published by Northwestern University Press in the anthology titled “Katrina On Stage”. Tony nominee actor Brandon Uranowitz is appearing in “Burn This” alongside Academy Award nominee Adam Driver and Golden Globe winner Keri Russell currently on Broadway at the Hudson Theater at 141 W 44th Street in New York City talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™. The fabulous play by Lanford Wilson begins shortly after the funeral of Robbie a young gay dancer who drowns in a boating accident with his lover Dom. Robbie’s other roommates Anna played by Russell, a dancer/choreographer and Larry a confident gay ad man played by Uranowitz are joined by screenwriter Burton, Anna's longtime lover and Pale played by Driver, Robbie's hyperactive restaurant manager brother. Thrown together in this shared tragedy the quartet attempts to make sense of their lives and reconsider their own identities and relationships. “Burn This” is a smoldering story of love and raw attraction by one of the most vital playwrights of the modern era. It’s directed by Tony winner Michael Mayer and also costars Tony nominee David Furr. We talked to Brandon about how he got involved in this openly gay role and his spin on our LGBTQ issues.
When asked what his personal commitment is to LGBTQ civil rights especially with the 50th anniversary of Stonewall coming up Uranowitz stated, “It is extremely important to me. I mean I think it’s probably the most important thing to me particularly trans rights. I think trans visibility is of the utmost importance now. It’s sort of at the top of my priority list I guess if I was to have one and you know it’s a funny question only because I can’t imagine someone in my position that there’s anything less than a 100% commitment. So I guess it’s hard for me to answer because it just feels organic and natural for me to make that my mission to be a representative for our community and make sure that we are seen and heard and we are accepted and equality is something that we fight for and we win. We were winning but it looks like we’re taking a few steps back but I will be on the frontline with my colleagues to make sure that we fight always. It would be weird that anyone would say otherwise.”
Brandon Uranowitz is a two-time Tony Award nominee for his performances in “An American in Paris” and “Falsettos.” In 2018 he was acclaimed for his starring roles as Otto Kringelein in “Grand Hotel” at New York City Center Encores! and Itzik in the Tony Award winning Best Musical “The Band’s Visit.” His upcoming film credits include “The Kitchen,” starring Melissa McCarthy and “Stage Fright.” On television Brandon has a recurring role in season two of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Additionally, he has made guest starring appearances on “Dietland”, “Blue Bloods" and “Inside Amy Schumer”. Ted Allen, television personality and host of Food Network’s “Chopped” talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about Dining Out For Life the HIV/AIDS fundraiser. Dining Out For Life hosted by Subaru® takes place in 60 cities across North America on Thursday, April 25th. The event was conceived 28 years ago in Philadelphia and the concept is quite simple. More than 3,000 participating restaurants donate a generous percentage of that day’s proceeds to support service providers in their region to fund care, prevention, education, testing, counseling and other essential HIV/AIDS services. This year over 3,000 participating restaurants, thousands of volunteers and an expected 300,000+ diners will be served to raise over $4 million for people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States and Canada. We talked to Ted about being a spokesperson for this fabulous event and his spin on our LGBTQ issues.
When asked what he would like Dining Out For Life to accomplish this year Allen stated, “Well I think the model has long been proven, it raises a lot of money. What I think we would like to accomplish this year is to raise more money than we ever had before and we are talking about millions and millions of dollars that you are helping to raise that stays in your community. The money that is raised in Houston is spent in Houston helping your own neighbors, people down the block and I think that’s another thing that people feel really good about with this technique of fundraising.”
Emmy and James Beard Award winner Ted Allen is the host of “Chopped” and “Chopped Junior” the Food Network’s hit primetime culinary competition shows and the author of two cookbooks, “In My Kitchen: 100 Recipes and Discoveries for Passionate Cooks” and “The Food You Want to Eat: 100 Smart, Simple Recipes" both published by Clarkson-Potter.
